Ceiling fans are commonly used during the summer months. They help keep a room cooler by circulating air. However, ceiling fans are also very useful during the fall and winter. During the fall, when it is not quite hot enough to run the air conditioning, a ceiling fan is perfect for keeping any room cool by circulating just enough air to make it feel like a cool breeze is blowing through. In the winter, a ceiling fan can also be used to help circulate heat evenly throughout your home. These are some of the most common styles of ceiling fans made for residential homes.

Standard Ceiling Fans

Standard ceiling fans normally have four or five blades. The ceiling mount is attached to a piece of metal pipe that comes down and attaches to the motor housing of the fan. These fans normally hang at least seven feet above the floor of the room. Standard ceiling fans are available in a wide array of colors and designs to match any decor. They may or may not have built-in lights and may also swivel when the fan is turned on or remain still except for the rotation of the blades.

Low Profile Ceiling Fans

Low profile ceiling fans, also known as "hugger" ceiling fans, attach directly to the ceiling mount. There is no pipe between the ceiling mount and the motor housing. These ceiling fans are designed for rooms that have less than eight-foot ceilings. These fans normally have five blades and are available in various colors and styles.

Dual Motor Ceiling Fans

Dual motor ceiling fans have a stylish appearance and are often used both indoors and outdoors. These fans have two shorter metal pipes that extend out each side of the center ceiling mount. The pipes are each also connected to a smaller motor housing and smaller fan that normally has three blades. There may also be a light in the center on the ceiling mount as well.

Damp or Wet Ceiling Fans

Damp or wet ceiling fans look much like standard ceiling fans, but they are designed to be installed outdoors. These fans are commonly used on residential porches or patios. They help circulate the air outside to make it feel less humid. These fans are made to be resistant to rain and snow so they can be left installed outdoors all year round.

When choosing the best ceiling fan for your home, consider where you will be installing it and how frequently it will be turned on. There are Energy Star rated brands that use less energy to run than those that aren't.
