Home maintenance and roof repair are some pretty important details to take care of as a homeowner to protect your investment, inside and out. Here are some recommendations to help you have a good drainage gutter system for your roof.

Look For Proper Installation

The gutters that you choose for your home should look nice but also should be installed in a manner that allows them to collect and drain water without any leaking or dripping. When your gutters are installed, they should be installed on durable gutter hangers that are spaced so that they support the gutters without the gutters sagging away from the roof edge or between hangars. For example, if your hangers are spaced too widely, your gutters can sag between connections, causing water to sit within the gutters instead of draining to the downspouts.

Make sure that the gutters are sloped towards the sides of your home roof where a downspout is located. You can choose to have a downspout on both sides of your roof gutters or just along one side or the other. Depending on the size of your roof and your gutter's capacity, you may need more than one exit point for your gutter's drainage. The gutters need to have the right slope to allow for the right drain speed. A slope that is too steep will result in the water flowing too quickly, which can cause the gutters to overspill onto the ground. However, a slope that is not steep enough will keep the water sitting in the gutter and not draining out.

Repair Damage Gutters

Gutters that age and begin to break apart are not going to do any favors to your home and property. A gutter that has a lot of seams along the lengths and corners is going to be more prone to leaking. When the connections degrade, they will start leaking water, which will go onto your patio, foundation soil, and other areas to cause damage. Look to replace your damaged gutters with one made of a durable material that little to no seams to keep them in shape for the years and seasons to come.

You may be tempted to repair damage to your gutters with a patching kit and some roofing cement. This may give you a few days of storms before it begins to leak again, but it is not worth the effort. Instead, arrange for a gutter installation from Top of The Trades for a watertight drainage from your roof and away from your home for maximum moisture protection.
